The Black Gnat is as English as they can get and probably one of the oldest flies for which there are any credible sources, it appeared on the scene just before 1800 and has been one of the must-have in the anglers’ boxes ever since. Even if the fly it was originally supposed to imitate, Bibio Johannes, is not found in Iceland, this fly stands as one of the most widespread dry flies in trout and salmon fishing in Iceland.
As with so many dry flies, the original tying materials have been replaced with newer materials, but the fly itself always stands up for itself.
