The Nighthawk was designed by the well known American architect Stanford White b.1853. And was appropriately named, as he was equally well known for seducing young women and teenage girls. On June 25, 1906 his womanizing caught up with him and he was shot and killed at the supper club at the old Madison Square gardens, a building that he designed, by a jealous and frenzied Harry Kendal Thaw. He left America not only this great salmon and steelhead fly but also some of its most remarkable and lavish buildings, including homes for the Astors and Vanderbilts.
This fly has succesfully migrated to Icelandic rivers where it is very popular.
